When you talk about filters for furnace or air conditioner systems with forced air, you should never hear the term HEPA. That’s because a true HEPA-rated filter relies on getting all the gunk out of your air in one pass. This makes the filter weave so dense, however, that on a forced air system, it would work twice as hard to maintain proper air flow. Instead, filters for these systems use MERV ratings, knowing that although the weave is more porous, over several passes, your filter is still going to remove over 95% of the pollutants that it’s rated for. For a MERV 11 filter, that’s irritants that are 1 to 3 microns or larger. That covers all your standard allergens (pollen, pet dander, mold spores, dust mites, etc.). Just make sure that you change your filter every three months for maximum efficiency.
